What is your spiritual background?
I have always been surrounded by "church" people, but I did not grow up *in* the church. My grandfather has been a Baptist minister for over 50 years now and many members of my extended family have also been involved in ministry of some sort. I grew up knowing my mom loved Jesus, but we never did the whole "church" thing aside from a couple summers of Bible school.

As a teen I rebelled a bit, experimenting with drugs and studying various religions, desperately searching for that something to finally make me feel whole. The God I had known as a child didn't sit right with me and I knew there had to be something more to life than the misery and hypocrisy and selfishness I was seeing in the world all around me.

After much soul searching and quite a heart wrenching journey, I finally gave my heart to Jesus in 1999, at the age of 21. Shortly after that, I met my amazing husband, who was on a very similar path, and we started attending church together. We attended the church for three years and learned alot about God in that time. We both had some issues with the doctrine being taught there, and it started to feel less and less like "home", so we eventually drifted out.

We have been out of the church scene for 5 years now, and it has been the most *awesome* journey. I feel closer to the heart of God now than I ever have before! I've spent much of my time reading and praying and self-feeding. It has been so good for my spirit. I feel like I am truly beginning to understand the love and grace of God for the first time in my life.

I had spent plenty of time in my earlier years reading about remarkable people such as Mother Teresa and Gandhi, Corrie Ten Boom and Martin Luther King Jr., which was so inspiring and heart- stirring. But over these last few years, I've discovered the works of people like Shane Claiborne and Donald Miller, Brian McClaren and Rob Bell, the music of the Psalters and Jes Karper, and it has been so refreshing and enlightening to me. A breath of fresh air in a world gone stale and toxic. It's really good to know there are others out there who are on the same journey. :) Gives me much hope for the world and the Church.

Hey Jamie.

Thanks so much for sharing your story here. It's good to hear how God has been at work in your life drawing you away from the institution and into real life.

Pull up a bench and enjoy the conversation. Spread the word...lot's of empty space on the bench. :-)
